What in the G.E.M.M. Protocol?
The G.E.M.M. Protocol (Gut Ecology & Metabolic Modulation) is a unique system of health care designed to harness the principles of Nature in helping to restore normal function to human cells.
The cells of the Gut-Immune Network send thousands of biochemical signals throughout the body, normalising the function of many cells in other parts of the body.
When your cells are functioning at their peak, your body can begin to repair itself, regardless of the names of any conditions you may have.
G.E.M.M.’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it is a lifestyle approach that utilises theprinciples of a branch of Nutrition Science called Nutrigenomics. This is the study of how foods and specific food molecules influence the expression of our genes. Such food molecules activate ‘switches’ within our cells; if the source of these molecules is health promoting food, our protective genes are ‘turned up’ – but if the molecules are from ‘junk’ food, these health-promoting genes are ‘turned down’ and the disease-promoting genes are ‘turned up’. The culinary and lifestyle skills you will learn as a G.E.M.M. patient will enable you to maintain your new sense of wellbeing for the rest of your life.
The science of Nutrigenomics plays an important role in the programme’s success. As you progress through the G.E.M.M. levels, you will find symptoms disappearing as your overall state of health improves.
How are G.E.M.M. clinicians qualified to use this approach?
Because G.E.M.M. integrates several branches of science, the knowledge base and the relevant education process is complex.
G.E.M.M. clinicians are required to have practical knowledge of human physiology and biochemistry.
These entry requirements are essential prior to a clinician undertaking the G.E.M.M. course, with clinicians typically qualified in Integrative Medicine, Naturopathy, Nutrition Science, Nutrigenomics and Dietetics.
Annual upskilling is required of G.E.M.M. clinicians to maintain their accreditation.
Does G.E.M.M. require a specific ‘diet’?
G.E.M.M. promotes a Diet of Inclusion, not Diets of Exclusion. A few foods may need to be excluded initially when embarking on G.E.M.M but the ultimate aim of the G.E.M.M.
Protocol is to encourage a diverse array of minimally-processed whole foods which are introduced sequentially as you progress through the programme.
With G.E.M.M, you will leave fad diets at the door to enjoy foods that are both delicious and nutritious!
What conditions does this approach treat?
Whilst G.E.M.M. initially addresses the function of the gut, it then works to improve the function of all bodily systems.
The nutrigenomically-active ingredients in the formulations together with the underlying diet help to improve the function of all the body’s cells at a fundamental level. What this means is that the name of your condition doesn’t matter very much.
G.E.M.M. adopts the principles of Nature to restore cellular function in whatever tissue or organ your condition lies.
For G.E.M.M. to give long-lasting results, it is required that you maintain the diverse array of health-promoting foods and lifestyle. Your new lifestyle habits will make it remarkably easy to maintain good health.
Will G.E.M.M. help to improve my immune function?
While targeting digestive health is the first step of the G.E.M.M. Protocol, the second step focuses on restoring the communication between the gut and its underlying immune network.
In doing so, G.E.M.M. balances the complex immune system, thereby enhancing the response to infection while reducing allergy and autoimmune reactions.
The Fitgenes Fast Track to Health program is based on the science of Nutrigenomics and how our genes are influenced by our nutrition, exercise and lifestyle.
Scientific evidence tells us that our genes are not static, but in fact responsive to the choices we make, which impacts on how effectively they express themselves.
Gene expression is a way of explaining how we feel in terms of our wellbeing and how effectively our bodies function. Based on a non-invasive saliva sample Karinas would be able to take a holistic approach to addressing facets of your genetic profile that reveal which nutritional supplements will benefit you the most, the best choices of foods to consume and the type of exercise that will have a positive effect.
This effectively eliminates any guesswork around what will work
for you as the treatment plan is based on your own genetic profile.
We will guide you through the Fitgenes Fast Track to Health program with a series of consultations,
ultimately seeing you through to a healthier state of physical and mental wellbeing.

Prep time: 15 min Cook time: Poke a sweet potato all over with a fork and then bake in the oven for 45-60 min. Servings: Yield: 60 crackers Source: asaucykitchen.com Ingredients: 1 cup I 150g whole almonds 1/2 cup I 100g mashed sweet potato (nothing added to it) 25g Tapioca flour plus more for rolling out the dough 25g brown rice flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped 2 tablespoon olive oil Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 160 C (338 F) 2. Add the almonds to a blender or food processor and blend until you reach a sandy but flour-like texture. 3. Transfer the almond meal to a large mixing bowl with the mashed sweet potato, tapioca flour, salt, rosemary and garlic powder. Stir in the olive oil. Mix everything until it all comes together to form a sticky dough. 4. Sprinkle a little more tapioca flour over a large sheet of parchment paper. Place the dough on top of the paper and then place another sheet of parchment paper over the top. Roll out the dough between the paper until it's 3mm thick. 5. Peel back the top piece of paper and cut the dough into 2.5 squares. 6. Transfer the squares to a lined or greased baking sheet. Leave a little bit of space between each square. 7. Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 10 min or until the tops are golden and edges are crispy. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes.
Learn MorePrep time: 15 min Cook Time: 1 hr Servings: 10 Source: Quitegoodfood.co.nz Ingredients 1 cup sunflower seeds ¾ cup pumpkin seeds ½ cup chia seeds ½ cup sesame seeds (I used a mix of black and white sesame seeds) ¼ cup flaxseed (linseed) 1 teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups water 1 tablespoon dried herbs of your choice (Basil, Thyme) 1 teaspoon chilli flakes (optional) Intructions 1.Preheat oven to 170C (340F) fanbake. 2.Mix all ingredients together and leave for 10-15 minutes for the seeds to soak up the water. 3. Give everything a good stir, then split the mixture over two lined baking trays and spread thinly. The ideal thickness is about 3-4mm. Too thin and the crackers will be very fragile, too thick and they'll be more like a seed cookie than a cracker. 4. Bake for one hour (switching the trays around halfway through), or until golden brown and crisp. If they don't feel crisp after an hour, return to the oven for another 5-10 minutes. 5. Remove from the oven, allow to cool, then break into irregular shards. Store in an airtight container.
